The landmark obscenity trial surrounding a satirical Australian magazine
becomes a metaphor for a wild ride through swinging, 1960s-era London in
director Beeban Kidron's adaptation of Richard Neville's memoir Hippie Hippie
Shake: The Dreams, the Trips, the Trials, the Love-ins, the Screw Ups: The
Sixties. Cillian Murphy stars as Neville in a film that follows the editors of
Oz as they relocate to London and are forced to defend a sexually explicit
issue of their irreverent magazine after it raises the eyebrows of the Obscene
Publications Squad. The resulting legal battle would become the longest
obscenity trial in the history of English law. Though the publishers of Oz
were initially sentenced to hard labor, a subsequent appeal would find their
sentences commuted under the agreement that they cease publication of the
controversial magazine.

FACTS
Germaine Greer was one of the persons not
happy to be portrayed in the movie. Greer wrote in her piece to The
Guardian, "You used to have to die before assorted hacks started munching your
remains and modelling a new version of you out of their own excreta." Taking
it a step further, she goes on to take a shot at Neville, saying he was "one
of the least talented people on the London scene in the 60's"

"I'm kind of used to it from Clubland. I got that out
of the way early. Still, getting naked next to Sienna Miller it's like, 'Oh
damn." "I was feeling rather bloated that day and I was like, 'Oh no, I'm a
fatty boombah with skinny little legs and a big fat belly' and she's laughing
going, 'Shut up, look at the size of your a--- compared with mine'."
